Have you ever noticed how hard it can be to answer the simple question: “What do I actually want?”
Whether you’re moving through midlife changes, shifting careers, or simply sensing that something in your life feels “off,” getting clear on what you truly want can feel elusive. We live in a fast, noisy world full of options, distractions, and expectations — so it’s no wonder many of us feel disconnected from our deeper desires.
During one of my monthly free coaching calls, I shared my top 3 tips for finding clarity and reconnecting with what you really want. These are simple yet powerful tools to help you navigate transition with more ease, awareness, and self-trust.
Sometimes the easiest way to discover what you do want is to start with what you don’t want. When you feel stuck, frustrated, or unsure, those feelings are actually signposts pointing you toward clarity. I call this “clarity through contrast.”
For example, when my husband and I were thinking about moving house, we realised how much information was hidden in our frustrations with our current home. We didn’t want the constant maintenance that an old property requires, an oversized garden, or being isolated from like-minded people. From that contrast, our real desires became crystal clear — a modern, energy-efficient home with a smaller, more manageable garden, and closer to a vibrant intentional community.
💡 Try this:
Draw a line down the middle of a page. On one side, list three things you don’t want or don't like about your current situation. Then, on the other side, write three things which you know that you do want instead.
Let the contrast reveal your clarity.

It’s not the thing you want — it’s the feeling underneath it.
Often, we chase goals like a new home, job, or relationship thinking they’ll make us happy. But what we’re really after is the emotional experience we believe that thing will bring.
Ask yourself: “How do I want to feel?”
When I envisioned our new home, it wasn’t about square footage or design — it was about feeling ease and connection. Once you identify what Danielle LaPorte calls your "core desired feelings", you can make choices that align with them in every area of life.
💡 Try this:
Think about one area you’d like to change. Then ask, “What feeling am I really seeking?” Write down the first words that come — calm, freedom, joy, belonging, creativity, peace. These are your compass points.
Clarity can’t come when your mind, calendar, and energy are full. To truly connect with what you want — and to feel how you want to feel — you must create space for it.
That might mean:
🕯 Setting aside time to meditate or journal
🌸 Letting go of commitments that don’t align with your core feelings
🧘♀️ Saying no more often (under-committing instead of overextending)
🌿 Creating a vision board or quiet ritual to visualise your next steps
Making space isn’t a luxury — it’s essential. It’s what allows the next chapter to unfold naturally.
